ACADEMIC MENTORING PROGRAM The Poway Unified School District would like to offer you and your organization a unique opportunity to experience what educators have experienced for years. By investing a minimum amount of time (30-60 minutes per week), you can make a difference in the life of a student. We are seeking members of our community to become mentors for individual students. We will provide all the training and support you may need. You just need to provide the time Your role as a mentor can be that of coach, tutor, consultant, teacher, or relationship builder. This year's mentoring theme is “Be the one to make a difference,” paralleling appointed secretary of state General Colin Powell’s plea for action from America’s Promise, a national movement to encourage mentoring. The overall program goal is to bring together, within the educational environment, caring members of the community with students identified as needing support and encouragement to achieve in school and to enhance their lives. The Academic Mentoring Program has had a positive effect on the students who have participated in the program. Some of the results of a year end independent evaluation were as follows: * 98% of mentored students said they had benefited from the program. * 66% of mentored students showed increases in their GPA’s. * Many students said that the mentors helped them to do their homework, become more organized, and to “feel better” about themselves. * 90% of students stated they wanted to return to the program. If anyone in your organization participates, the Poway Unified School District would like to give your company community service recognition. The District will award any organization with 10 or more mentors with a gold cup, 5-9 with a silver, and 2 or more a bronze. If interested call Steve Bisbikis at 748-0571 or Deb Pint at 748-0010 x2465.
